Conflicts between garage doors and overhead cranes are more common than you might think—and they can be costly! Why does this problem occur so frequently, and can it be prevented?
At Premium, we encounter this situation far too often during installation. It’s a problem that shouldn’t be taken lightly, as it can affect operations throughout the entire service life of the equipment or lead to unexpected costs and installation delays.
In this article, we explain why these conflicts happen so often, the consequences they create, and how to prevent them.
Why are there so many issues with garage doors when installing an overhead crane?
Most of the time, this problem stems from a lack of coordination among the parties in a new construction project. Here is what typically happens :
-
- The initial plans indicate the location of garage doors but not their actual specifications, such as track height, bending radius and motor clearance.
-
- In other cases, changes are made to the door configuration after the overhead crane has already been manufactured.
The result : the overhead crane is manufactured based on outdated information. During installation, interference or insufficient clearance is discovered between the two systems (see the article Overhead crane obstructions: A costly but preventable problem)
By the time you're on site, it's too late. The issue needs to be corrected…
Is this common? In fact, the majority of projects involving garage doors present obstruction or clearance issues. In other words, there’s a good chance your next installation will face this challenge!
Now let’s look at why you should take this seriously.
What are the consequences of insufficient clearance between your overhead crane and a garage door?
If these situations aren’t anticipated, here’s what you can expect :
Limited movement of your new overhead crane
In the best-case scenario, the overhead crane you invested in will operate with manageable limitations. For example, the area covered by the lifting device or the hook approach might be reduced. But if you can accept these limitations, it’s a small price to pay compared to the following consequences…
Modifications to the overhead crane or garage door
Often, the limitations caused by insufficient clearance are too significant to ignore. Therefore, adjustments must be made either to the overhead crane components or to the garage door installation. These modifications may be minor and performed on-site, or major and require factory work.
Potential consequences :
The following examples illustrate potential problems, their consequences, and the solutions to be implemented.
Situation 1 – Insufficient clearance for the garage door’s bending radius

Situation 2 – Garage door track obstructing overhead crane travel

Situation 3 – Situation 3 – Garage door motor interfering with overhead crane movement

Why are these situations often overlooked?
Garage doors are often perceived as a stationary object, similar to a ventilation unit. In reality, it moves along a track system, just like an overhead crane. These are therefore two moving systems operating in close proximity and are thus likely to collide.

So, the big question is: how can we prevent this from happening?
How to avoid conflicts between a garage door and an overhead crane?
The key to avoiding these issues is effective coordination among all parties involved.
The owner is responsible for providing accurate information to the contractors involved. However, in most cases, a project manager or coordinator is assigned to oversee the work. Here’s a simple action plan to prevent conflicts :
-
Appoint a vigilant coordinator with strong communication skills
-
Make sure this person is informed about the clearance and obstruction risks between overhead cranes and garage doors
-
Have them review the plans from all suppliers to confirm there are no conflicts before the equipment is designed and manufactured
-
Share any updates with all suppliers involved (garage doors AND overhead cranes)
In short, a project coordinator must be proactive. But it’s worth the effort, because when you know in advance how much space garage doors will take up, there are several solutions available that can be implemented before installation, thereby avoiding much more costly complications.

Take the initiative by being proactive
Garage doors are not static building components that can be overlooked during a bridge crane installation project in a new building. On the contrary, they can create conflicts that lead to additional costs, delays, or long-term limitations for your production.
Now that you’re aware of the risks, take the initiative! By applying the recommendations above, all parties involved will be aligned, helping you avoid costly mistakes.
How can you prepare effectively to avoid these kinds of issues in your project? First, we recommend reading the article “ Overhead crane obstructions: A costly but preventable problem ”. It covers potential obstructions not only from garage doors but from most building systems.
When your project begins, you can share these articles with the person responsible for coordinating your project so they can implement best practices.
And finally, if needed… 👉 Talk to a Premium specialist to validate your configuration before manufacturing.
