Modernization

Over time, needs and technologies evolve. Is your lifting equipment still suited to your needs and up to safety standards? Do you need to increase its capacity? Would it be better to replace it to save money? If not, how can you get the most out of your existing overhead crane? One way to optimize your investment could be to modernize your current equipment!

What is an overhead crane modernization?

Modernizing an overhead crane means " renovating " it to achieve a specific goal. In general, this involves replacing, modifying, or adding an important component, such as :

  • A remote control system
  • A hoist
  • A trolley
  • A gear motor
  • End carriages
  • Wheels
  • The electric system
  • The runway track
  • The structure (often to increase capacity).

Examples of overhead crane modernization

Here are a few examples of overhead crane modernization :

  • Increase the capacity of the overhead crane
  • Replace an obsolete hoist
  • Add a hoist to use the overhead crane in tandem
  • Replace end carriages or an obsolete motorization
  • Increase lifting height with girder risers
  • Moving to a new building that already has overhead cranes: to find out if they can be recovered.
  • Modify equipment at the request of the CNESST
  • Etc.

Modernizing or replacing my overhead crane: how to decide?

Several factors must be taken into account to determine whether it's better to repair your overhead crane, modernize it, or replace it with a new one.

But generally speaking, if repairs to an overhead crane cost more than $10,000, it may be advantageous to consider modernizing a component. On the other hand, if the cost of the upgrade represents more than 70% of the price of a new overhead crane, then it may be better to opt for a new one.

However, these numbers are not sufficient, as there are other factors to consider in this type of analysis. An overview of the lifting equipment must be drawn up in order to determine the “health” of the other parts of the overhead crane.

So, where do you start when evaluating a modernization project?
  1. Engineering : do the plans of your overhead crane exist?
    • If so, your overhead crane supplier will need them: this will be the first step in assessing whether the project is feasible
    • If you don't have the plans, the engineering alone could well drive up the cost of modernization. 1 .
  2. Inspection reports : consulting these will allow you to check the condition of the rest of the lifting equipment. This is a good indicator for deciding on the best option.
  3. Contacting your lifting specialist: with photos of your overhead crane, recent inspection reports, and engineering documentation (if available) in hand, your expert can help you determine the right course of action.

Why is all this analysis important? To make your project as risk-free as possible. A modernization project can lead to high costs as the project progresses, without you even realizing it. By analyzing all these details with you first, your expert can help you avoid going down the wrong path.
