Gantry cranes

What is a gantry crane?

A gantry crane is industrial lifting equipment designed to move heavy loads. It consists of two vertical legs (full gantry crane) or a single vertical leg (semi-gantry crane) and a horizontal beam. This structure enables the hoist to move along the crossbeam to lift and transport loads. It usually runs on rails fixed to the ground.

What are the types of gantry cranes?

Industrial gantry cranes include full gantry cranes and semi-gantry cranes. There are also similar devices, such as port cranes for loading and unloading ships, and rubber-tired gantry cranes, also widely used in ports. For occasional or temporary work, there are portable or adjustable gantry cranes.

These have the same functionality as overhead cranes, but are configured with two legs. The rails are located at ground level, usually fixed to a concrete slab, concrete foundation or specially designed steel girders.

Frequently asked questions

01.
Why install a rail for a gantry crane?

A : The rail is required for proper operation in an industrial environment.

  1. Alignment: The rail ensures straight crane travel, avoiding deviations caused by uneven ground or imbalance caused by the weight of the load.
  2. Wheel wear: The rail ensures even distribution of wheel wear, extending equipment life and reducing maintenance costs.
02.
How are the rails installed?

A : Rail installation varies according to capacity and environment
Here are a few common methods :

  1. Capacities of 5 tons and less: For indoor installation, the rails can be placed and fixed to the concrete slab.
  2. High capacitites or outdoors: The rails can be laid on a steel beam fixed to the ground or on a concrete foundation designed specifically to receive the rail.
  3. Other option: The rails can also be embedded in the foundation.
03.
Does a gantry crane cost less than an outdoor overhead crane?
A : No, a gantry crane does not cost less than an outdoor overhead crane. Although a gantry crane requires less structure, the overall cost of acquisition and installation is generally higher. Read our article to find out more: https://groupeindustrielpremium.com/en/learning-center/gantry-crane-vs-outdoor-overhead-crane-which-is-more-economical
04.
How do you power a gantry crane?

A : Gantry crane run on electricity.
Here are some methods of powering them :

  1. Conductor bars: Just like an overhead crane, conductor bars can be installed to provide the necessary electricity.
  2. Cable reels: It's also common to see cable reels used to power gantry cranes.

It's important not to overlook the position of the conductor bars or the cable reels, as this can have a significant impact on your production.

05.
What are the advatanges of a gantry crane?

A : The workstation and load shifting

  1. Workstation: In the industrial environment, gantry cranes are used to feed a machine or create a workstation without disrupting the operations of overhead cranes positioned on the upper level.
  2. Load shifting: They also allow material to be moved between two overhead crane bays, or to transport loads between two sections of your plant where the installation of an overhead crane is not possible.
06.
What are inconveniences of a gantry crane?

A : Storage limitation and traffic conflicts

  1. Storage limitation: The gantry crane limits the possibility of storage in the areas where it circulates, as the ground rails must remain free at all times.
  2. Traffic conflicts: There is a possibility of conflict between the gantry crane and areas of pedestrian or forklift traffic, which can pose safety issues.
