Monorail

Monorail

Monorails enable light loads to be moved in one direction at low cost. On this page, learn about monorails, their different types and the ideal contexts for using them.

What is a monorail?

It's a lifting device equipped with a fixed beam rather than an overhead crane. The trolley and its hoist move along this beam in a single direction.

What are the different types of monorail?

  • Straight
  • Curved
  • Closed-loop: curved monorail that turns back on itself
  • Cantilever
  • Telescopic : stacked retractable beams
  • With switch : system for diverting the hoist to another beam
  • With transfer mechanism : system for transferring the hoist from the monorail to an overhead crane

What are the different types of monorail structures?

  • Suspended : from the ceiling, beams, under a mezzanine, etc.
  • Freestanding :  with two columns or arch structures.
  • Rails with H or I beams: allows for greater lifting capacity.
  • Ergonomic rails (trolley rolling inside a track): suitable for capacities under 2,000 kg, with manual trolley movement.

Could the installation of a monorail be considered construction work requiring an RBQ license?

Yes. When installing an under running monorail or a monorail attached to the building structure, the work could be considered modifications to the building structure and be subject to building regulations.

For more information on work subject to Quebec construction law, see the article “Is an RBQ license required to install an overhead crane in Quebec?” . For a concrete example, see the case study  “ContiTech: A partnership that meets automation challenges” .

What are the different types of power supply for a monorail?

The right choice of power supply will depend on the configuration of the monorail and the environment.

Here are the options available :

  • Conductor bars
  • Festoon
  • Cable reel (with or without swivel base)

When should you consider buying a monorail?

Mainly designed for…

  • Lifts in a single direction
  • Light loads
  • Limited budget

Monorails are widely used in assembly plants and production lines. They are economical and mainly suited to light loads.

However, they are designed to move loads in one direction only. Which is why they are less flexible than overhead cranes.

If you are looking for a simple, economical, and directional solution for moving light loads, a monorail is an excellent choice.
