Are you about to sign a contract to purchase an overhead crane ? This is an important step! But in addition to choosing the overhead crane and supplier, you are probably wondering how the installation will go. What should you expect, and how can you contribute to the success of this project?
In this article, we present the eight main steps involved in installing an overhead crane. From signing the contract to commissioning, here's what to expect and how to prepare to avoid delays and costly surprises.
Useful documents will gradually be added to this article to help you with your project.
The 8 main stages of an overhead crane installation
It's true that when we think about installation, we often think about the day when the overhead crane will be erected on the rails. But the installation stages begin well before that.
Let's review them together.
Step 1 – Project confirmation

📌This is the time for you to check the terms of the agreement.
Step 2 - Measurements and technical validation

It's important for the technical team to visit the site to confirm all dimensions, clearances and technical constraints.
📌You will need to give them access and prepare for their visit.
Step 3 – Design and approval of drawings

Your supplier will finalize the plans and submit them to you for final approval to avoid errors and misunderstandings.
📌You will need to sign the final plans and return them to your supplier before production begins, so as to not delay the installation date.
Step 4 - Manufacturing and site preparation

While your overhead crane is being manufactured, it's the best time to…
📌 ensure that everything will be ready for installation. For example, make sure that the lifting platforms will be available and that the space will be cleared, etc.
Step 5 – Delivery

When ready, your equipment will be delivered to your site so that it is ready for the installation day. Your supplier will notify you of the delivery date so that you can prepare.
📌If installation is not scheduled to take place shortly after delivery, the equipment must be stored in a place protected from the elements. For more information on this subject, see the article " Overhead crane installation : 8 problems to avoid – problem 7 ".
Step 6 – The installation

The installation team erects the overhead crane (including the structure, if applicable). They also take care of the electrical connections before the power supply installation.
📌Please note that the installation may require a temporary interruption of your operations.
Step 7 - Commissioning, inspection and load test

After installation, operational tests will be carried out.
📌At this stage, it's essential for the overhead crane to be connected to the building's electrical system (see the article " Who connects an overhead crane to the building ").
As required by the standard, the equipment must be inspected and a load test must be performed.
📌If you are responsible for providing the weights for the load test, make sure they are ready for use.
Step 8 – Documentation

The final step in the process is when you receive all the documents related to the installed equipment.
📌This is the starting point of your logbook, which will allow you to demonstrate the compliance of your overhead cranes. For more information on this point, see the article " Compliance of lifting and handling equipment "
