What is an under running crane?

An under running overhead crane is a lifting device where the crane runs on rails attached directly to the ceiling (or to the building structure), unlike conventional overhead cranes which rest on rails laid on a structure.

Lifting capacity: up to ~ 16 metric tons
Span: up to ~ 25 meters
Lifting height: up to ~ 20 meters
Hoist type: chain or wire rope
Runway: H- or I-beam fixed to building ceiling

Single girder standard, double girder on request

What are the advantages of under running overhead cranes?

Ideal when building a freestanding structure is not an option
Generally better lateral approach to the hook
Allows hoists to be transferred from one crane to another, or to a monorail, depending on the configuration.

What are the disadvantages of under running overhead cranes?

Lifting capacity limited by building structure
Span generally smaller than top running overhead cranes
More frequent maintenance due to ceiling-mounted rails, which can be subjected to building movements. This can lead to rail misalignment.
