What is an under running crane?

An under running overhead crane is a lifting device where the crane runs on rails attached directly to the ceiling (or to the building structure), unlike conventional overhead cranes which rest on rails laid on a structure.

  • Lifting capacity: up to ~ 16 metric tons
  • Span: up to ~ 25 meters
  • Lifting height: up to ~ 20 meters
  • Hoist type: chain or wire rope
  • Runway: H- or I-beam fixed to building ceiling
 

Possible configurations :

 
  1. Single girder standard, double girder on request
  2. Straight or flush-mounted connection
  3. Other capacities, spans and lifting heights available on request

What are the advantages of under running overhead cranes?

 

  1. Ideal when building a freestanding structure is not an option
  2. Generally better lateral approach to the hook
  3. Allows hoists to be transferred from one crane to another, or to a monorail, depending on the configuration.

 

What are the disadvantages of under running overhead cranes?

 

  1. Lifting capacity limited by building structure
  2. Span generally smaller than top running overhead cranes
  3. More frequent maintenance due to ceiling-mounted rails, which can be subjected to building movements. This can lead to rail misalignment.

In the structural plan, one of the columns encroaches on an emergency exit door. Is this a problem?
A : Yes! No obstructions, fixed installations or turnstiles may encroach on the required width of an emergency exit (National Building Code NBC-2015, article 3.4.3.3).

What distances do I need to respect around an electrical unit for my structural project?
A : A clearance of 1 m in front of an electrical panel is required to ensure safe access for maintenance, inspection and emergency response. (Canadian Electrical Code CEC, Article 2-308).

How can I check if the concrete slab can bear a self-supporting overhead crane structure?
 A : Slab specifications are generally indicated in the quotation from your structural supplier. After validation by the engineer, they will be added to the design plans.

In general, it's up to the owner to check the slab. They can consult their building's construction plans or inspect the existing installation. Premium Industrial Group also offers an accompanying service, including scans or coring of the slab.

The aim is to ensure that the slab meets the engineer's requirements. Please note that this verification does not serve as a certification of capacity. We recommend that you document and archive these analyses.
